A Conversation With A Professional Tarot Card Reader In Singapore
Do you believe in fortune telling?
If you have been on social media for the past year, tarot card readings, crystals, and astrology are all the rage on social media. It is not uncommon to come across videos on Instagram or TikTok with short generic tarot card readings on your For You Page.
While tarot card readings may have started gaining popularity within the past year, Japan has a long history of utilising tarot cards for fortune telling since 1961! Also, if you haven’t already heard, Nichiyu, the first Japanese company to sell tarot cards in Japan has opened the first-ever tarot card museum in Japan!
Read on as we speak with Kelly, a professional tarot card reader!
I speak with Kelly, who shares with us her journey navigating as a professional tarot card reader in Singapore, misconceptions about tarot reading, and tips for budding tarot card readers!
Kelly is a Lightworker, and is primarily clairvoyant and clairaudient, she has seen, heard, and sensed spirits since she was a young child. Some of Kelly’s services are that she is a natural Spirit channel, psychic medium, and a gifted Tarot, Angel, and Oracle card reader. She also is an animal communicator, healer and medium!
Q. What Inspired you to become a tarot card reader?
There were two people who inspired me to become a tarot card reader. The first, Monica Raj was someone I considered to be the pioneer of the spirituality movement in Singapore. She’s been doing spiritual work for decades, and I went for one tarot reading with her before my divorce, and she did a Celtic cross for me— A Celtic cross is a spread that has 10 cards, and the 10 cards will tell you everything about the situation as well as the near future.
7 out of the 10 cards I picked were part of the major arcana; and the major arcana usually have a higher degree of predestination, meaning that it would have a higher chance of happening. That was when I realised how powerful a tarot card reading was, because she also said a lot of things about my situation that I had told absolutely no one.
I also didn’t tell her that I was interested in tarot, but she said that one day I would become professional, and in 3 years, I would be invited to an event with my name across the island. Sure enough, in 2017 I was the reader for the Formula 1 Grand Prix, and my name was all over the website!
The second person was an animal communicator called Rosina. She gave me very good advice about a cat I was really worried about at that time. She inspired me to help people the way she did, and I’m extremely grateful to her.
Q. What do you enjoy the most about being a professional tarot card reader in Singapore?
People are open minded. They are educated, and willing to explore. Most importantly, they are also able to take charge of their lives. They give up on the idea that their whole life is predestined already. I feel like a lot of women don’t understand how strong and smart they are, and they beat themselves up so much and hold themselves to these unrealistic standards that when they reach that breakthrough, and feel like they can be in charge and they don’t have to be afraid— that’s when I consider that my job is done!
Q. Is there any difference between physical readings and online readings?
There is actually no difference! The tarot cards can read energy, and so long there is a bond, either through a phone call or something else. The tarot picks up energy really quickly.
Q. Are there any kind of readings that you refuse to do?
I have had people ask me questions like “Can you tell me what my daughter is doing that she refuses to tell me?”. Anything that violates freewill or freedom, I will try to angle the question in a way that does not probe into what is not our territory. Most of times they still get their answers, they just get it in a way that does not violate anyone’s privacy.
I also tend to avoid “When will I die?” questions. I have only given those predictions less than 5 times, and those situations were absolutely necessary. I do believe that under certain circumstances, the spirit realm will be kind and they will let you know so you can take the best course of action. Otherwise no, I try not to answer these questions.
Q. There are 3 cards in the tarot deck that are quite infamous. Are they “bad” cards to get in a tarot reading?
In tarot, there are 3 cards that we consider the “Dark Cards”; Death, The Tower, and The Devil.
None of them are anything that you need to be afraid of! The Tower is a card that basically means that an opportunity is coming for you that may look like a crisis, and it represents major change and that can be stressful for a lot of people. If you are strong, and you have that wisdom, you will look beyond the surface and find the meaning within it! Usually this card comes in when someone is going through a break up, or when they lose their job. The card that comes after The Tower is The Star! A card that signifies hope.
Death is a card of transformation! It could be abrupt and scary, but when you look back, you’ll find that that chapter in your life was meant to end anyway. There is a sunrise portrayed in the in the Ryder Waite version of the Death card. Even when something ends, the next day will come.
The Devil usually represents a controlling or manipulative dynamic. If The Devil appears in a love reading, either the person you are dating is really controlling, or the sex is really good!
Many times what we fear most are easy to defeat, the tarot always gives clues, and it is my job as a tarot reader to interpret it, and point them the way out.
Q. What is your favourite card or one that is most personal to you, and why?
The Sun is my favourite card in the Tarot. It's the most positive card in the deck, representing joy and success in whatever you choose to do. Even in a not-so-good reading (and remember that Tarot card meanings change with every different combination and context), The Sun still indicates that you will find clarity in a challenging situation.
Q. Do you have a message for people who are trying to start out in tarot?
There's no specific requirement to learn how to read the Tarot. It's best to start with the sincere intention to achieve the greatest good through the act of seeking clarity via the Tarot. As a skill, it's a fun little exercise in working with our intuition and developing greater self-awareness. Find a way to read the Tarot that works and that also resonates with your unique preferences, then practice and have fun!
It's a slightly different ball game when you're thinking of becoming a professional Tarot reader. Bear in mind that all spiritual workers have to work through a great deal of karma, and there are professional as well as spiritual responsibilities that must be undertaken in order to be truly effective/beneficial.
