Review: Kiwami Introduces New Dining Concept With Latest Menu Featuring Ramen, Izakaya-style Bar Bites, and More

There's no doubt that Singaporeans love Japanese cuisine as we can see more Japanese restaurants opening in Singapore! However, Singaporeans tend to think that quality Japanese food is pricey. Well, Kiwami is here to show you that is not the case.

To celebrate its 3rd anniversary, Kiwami has introduced a new concept- ramen restaurant by the day and modern izakaya at night, with its latest menu. Featuring mouthwatering and affordable items like ramen and izakaya-style bar bites.

Our team was invited down to one of its outlets at Chinatown Point and we were so excited to try its new menu! They are located at the corner of the second level, alongside several Japanese restaurants like Monster Curry and Nanbantei Japanese Restaurant. The space is simple and cosy, similar to other Japanese restaurants you see around the mall- decked with brown leather seats and wooden furniture.

Most of the items we tried were from the Izakaya menu- Escapade Izakaya Menu. Here's what we have from the Gyoza selection- Mentaiko Gyoza ($8.90 for 5 pieces) and Tomato Cheese Gyoza ($9.50 for 5 pieces).

The mentaiko sauce for the Mentaiko Gyoza is rich and flavourful, not overpowering the taste of the juicy pork gyoza. Not to forget to mention, they are very generous with their mentaiko sauce!

The Tomato Cheese Gyoza was served on a hot plate with tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese. Surprisingly, the creamy melty cheese and sweet-sour tomato sauce complement well with the gyoza.

Next, we tried Kani Karaage ($12.90), served with deep-fried Japanese soft shell crab. Unlike any other place, not only the dish has a perfect light crunch, but it also has lots of meat, and tastes especially sweet! We highly recommend you dip it with the flavourful homemade spicy mayo dip as it elevates the flavour of this dish!

Moving on, we had the Tebasaki ($8.50 for 6 pieces), our favourite dish among all! Perfectly fried till golden-brown, giving a crispy texture. And, it is well seasoned with Miyazaki sauce- giving a tangy and robust flavour!

Another item on the menu was the Surume Ika ($13.90), served with grilled squid glazed with teriyaki sauce which completed well together. The squid also has a chewy and tender texture.

Then, we went for the Unagi Kabayaki ($15.90) which comes with 8 pieces of unagi coated with a sweet glaze. The texture is soft, and each piece is packed with umami flavour.

The Age Tofu ($4.90 for 3 pieces), served with deep-fried seafood tofu, is another item you should try. It is so delicious, bursting with the flavours of shrimp! Texture-wise, it is similar to a fishcake- soft and silky.

The next dish we had was this delectable plate of Wafu Saikoro Steak ($15), which comes with pan-fried sirloin beef cubes with Japanese sauce served alongside tortilla chips. The meat is juicy and tender- we couldn't get enough of it!

The last dish from the à la carte selection was this refreshing plate of Truffle Edamame ($4.90) served with truffle sauce. The buttery taste of the edamame goes perfectly well with the notes of truffle flavour.

For the mains, we tried the Premium Spicy Miso Ramen ($16.90) and the Original Mazesoba ($11.90). The Premium Spicy Miso Ramen is a hearty dish- served with aromatic broth that comes with a spicy kick and 4 pieces of soft and tender Toroniku Cha Shu (Roast Pork Cheek). We would definitely order this again!

The Original Mazesoba served with a generous amount of minced pork is irresistibly tasty, bursting with umami flavor.

Final Thoughts

Not only the food here is delicious, but it is also affordable! We would say this is a great hangout place to go after work or during weekends with your friends or family to have a good dinner with their wide selection of alcohol- including Kiwami Freezers (Shochu Highballs) and Whiskey Highballs from $7.50.
